Paying Homage to Yoruba “Orishas” | See Atlanta Photographer James C. Lewis’ Exhibition

James C Lewis Orisha Exhibition - BellaNaija - January2014005
If you’ve ever wondered what Yoruba gods like Sango or Obatala looked like, here’s your chance to find out.
Depicting the beauty and essence of the ‘Orishas’ i.e divinities of the Yoruba culture, in Western Nigeria, Atlanta-based Photographer James C. Lewis created the ‘Orisha’ art exhibition to portray the Yoruba gods through art and illustration. The Yoruba culture, which is one of the largest tribes in Nigeria, has at least 1,700 gods of which 20 are recognized or most famous. Some of these gods are worshiped in their own rights while others are paid tribute through holidays and festivals.
Lewis was intrigued by the culture and the stories behind them and sought to portray their royalty and character using models and creative digital photography. In the images are gods – Ogun, Esu, Oya, Yemoja, Olokun, Orunmila, Osun, Sango, Aganju, Osanyin, Obatala, Babaluaye, Oba, Erinle, Oko, Osunmare, Ori, Olorun, Ibeji and Osoosi.
Check it out.

If Icons of the Bible were Black! See Atlanta Photographer James C. Lewis’ Exhibition

Goliath
In 2014 James C. Lewis made an amazing exhibition of “African Orishas” with the world as he paid homage to African deities through his art.
Click here if you missed it.
Even though these were also released in 2014, we just stumbled on yet another set of amazing photos by the photographer and we had to share.
James C. Lewis of Noire3000 has a series of photos that depict some of the most famous Bible characters as people of African and Middle Eastern origins.
The series features over 80 models who identify as Asian, Native American, Hispanic, African, Middle Eastern, Black American and West Indian.
According to him, “I think it is very important to see one’s self in the scripture so that it may become real in our eyes. The whitewashing of the Bible has always bothered me. However I’m happy to now have the opportunity to give a different point of view. I wish to exhibit a splash of color onto the biblical pages of history with my creative embellishments. By doing so I hope to open the minds and eyes of the ignorant and create open conversations of how we can learn to see the world through colorful lenses. After all, the Gospel of Jesus Christ is intended for everyone.”
The exhibition is called “Icons of the Bible”.
See more of his photos below.

Photo: Monitor lizard eats up deadly tiger snake after engaging in combat

A tiger snake strong enough to kill an adult human with just a single bite was photographed disappearing down the throat of a southern heath monitor lizard after a combat between the animals. The lizard didn't seem affected by the deadly poison that could be in the snake. Monitor lizards don't usually feed on snakes but it seems this one was very hungry and couldn't resist the meal that presented itself.
